How much smaller will it get?

It depends on the PDF. Scans and photo-heavy PDFs shrink the most. A PDF that is mostly text may barely change, and if we cannot make it smaller you get your original back.

Which level should I pick?

Balanced for most files, it keeps text and vectors sharp and shrinks the photos inside. Smaller squeezes the photos harder. Smallest turns every page into an image, which is the biggest drop but means the text can no longer be selected or searched.

Will it change how my PDF looks?

Balanced and Smaller only touch the photos inside the PDF, so pages look the same at a normal zoom. Smallest redraws every page as an image, so very fine print can look softer.

Can I compress a password protected PDF?

Not directly. Remove the password first, then add the file again.
